New data from Swinton reveals a spike in home insurance claims during half-term breaks.

Homeowners are being warned that they could broken windows or damaged carpets during the half-term school break.

According to data from Swinton, there was a 24 percent increase in home insurance claims during the last half-term holiday in February. Broken windows accounted for many of the incidents, with children sharpening up on their ball skills, but with poor weather forecasts for the break many of the accidents may take place indoors.

"School holidays dramatically increase the risk of an accident in the home and we would urge parents to check their home insurance policy to ensure they are covered," said Steve Chelton, insurer development manager at Swinton.

"Standard policies generally provide cover for accidental damage to electrical equipment, for example TVs, hi-fis and computers, however for parents with small children, it is worth considering increasing the amount of accidental damage you have to cover events such as accidents with paint and spillages on carpets."

Swinton also warned that garden thefts tend to increase at this point in the calendar, with bikes being taken and equipment stolen from garden sheds. According to a study released last month by M&S Money, 17 percent of garden owners know someone that has fallen victim to garden theft.
